Dr. Saverio Cannistrà O.C.D.

Father Saverio (Antonio Gennaro) Cannistrà of the Sacred Heart was born in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro on October 3, 1958. He studied Romanic Philology at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and after worked at the editorial Einaudi in Turin.

He joined the novitiate of the Discalced Carmelites Order in 1985 in Toscana and professed his first vows on September 17, 1986. He made his solemn profession in 1990 and was ordained to the priesthood on October 24, 1992.

He is Doctor of Dogmatic Theology from the Pontificia Università Gregoriana di Roma, and member of the Italian Theology Association. Furthermore, he has participated in numerous conferences organized by the Order. He speaks many different languages, has taught at the Faculty of Theology at the Teresianum of Roma and was professor in Christology and theological Anthropology at the Facoltà Teologica dell’Italia Centrale, Firenze.

P. Saverio, who was elected Superior Provincial in the Provincial Chapter of Tuscany for the first time in 2008, was elected General Superior of the Teresian Carmel at the 90th General Chapter celebrated in Fatima (Portugal).
